International Summer Courses German and English August 2015

The International Language Courses have contributed to the unique atmosphere of the University of Freiburg for more than 100 years. Nestled at the foot of the Black Forest mountains, Germany's Green City with its historical monuments and ecological policy offers a classic blend of old and new. The course fee includes

  • 72 hours of language instruction in the morning (18 days with 4x45 minutes of class)
  • optional participation in the language practise modules, seminars and lectures in the afternoon
  • the opportunity to use computer-assisted self-learning mechanisms in our language laboratory
  • course materials
  • use of the PC-Pools and Wireless LAN at the university
  • meals in the university cafeteria (Mensa) at student rates

Course Description

German Language and Culture
Language levels: all levels
The syllabus offers a variety of conversation practise and discussions, current listening and reading texts but also topics of your choice combined with modern and task-based grammar training. You can deepen and expand your oral and written competence of the German language under the guidance of our highly qualified, committed and experienced teachers. Specific study techniques such as reading strategies or presentation skills will also be practised. The lessons follow the aims of communicative competence of the European Framework for Languages in an entertaining and inspiring way and will assist your independent learning process.
 
German for Business and Economics
Language levels: B2, C1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR)
The course for Business German offers a variety of conversation exercises, classroom discussions as well as up to date reading and listening comprehension exercises covering numerous topics relevant to economics, such as banking, marketing, stock markets and business cycles and is combined with realistic grammar training. The course will be complemented by exercises in business correspondence as well as presentations in the field of business management and will introduce you to the requirements of the Prüfung Wirtschaftsdeutsch (PWD).
 
German for the Tourist Industry
Language levels: B2, C1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR)
The main focus of this course is the acquisition of the language skills which are utilised on a daily basis in the tourism industry. In addition to other specialist areas, the syllabus will include the areas of reception and restaurant, telephone information at a travel agency, gastronomy-specific vocabulary as well as presenting your own business at tourism conventions. A visit to a real business under expert’s guidance will put the finishing touch to this course.
 
Medical German
Language levels: B2, C1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR)
This course is intended for medical employees and medical students who want to improve their general German skills with a special focus on medical terminology and communication with patients and colleagues. Course contents will include medical case studies and simulations, medical evidence terminology, hospital procedures, intercultural communication, doctor-patient consultations as well as the discussion of patient treatments. You can deepen and expand your oral and written competence in the German language under the guidance of our highly qualified, committed and experienced teachers.
 
German for Natural Sciences and Engineering
Language levels: B2, C1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR)
This course is intended for participants from technical and science-oriented professions and degree courses. Technical terms frequently used in industry, engineering and science as well as useful phrases and grammatical structures will be practised with the help of authentic reading and listening comprehension tasks. Through discussions, simulations and the compilation of subject-relevant texts, for example reports, essays and emails, students will improve their spoken and written German.
 
Training for German Language Teachers
Language levels: C1, C2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR)
This course is intended for instructors who are teaching German abroad and for those aspiring to be. Besides the upper-level language training our highly qualified, committed and experienced teachers will equip you with methodological/didactical tips and will introduce you to the latest teaching materials.
 
English Language Course
Language levels: B1, B2, C1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR)

This course is specifically designed for students wanting to take up an English-language degree course at a German university. By means of authentic and up to date materials and a variety of interesting topics and texts you can brush up and intensify your knowledge of the English language. Task-based grammar and oral skills training under the guidance of our highly qualified teachers, who are all native speakers will guarantee a language training of the highest standards. Special study techniques such as reading strategies or presentation skills will also be practised. German language skills are not required.

English for Business and Economics
Language levels: B2, C1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR)
A variety of conversation exercises, classroom discussions as well as up to date reading and listening comprehension exercises covering numerous topics relevant to economics, such as banking, marketing, stock markets and business cycles will be combined with realistic grammar training. The course also offers exercises in business correspondence as well as presentation training in the field of business management.
 
English for Natural Sciences and Engineering
Language levels: B2, C1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR)
This course is intended for those working or studying in technical or science-oriented areas. You will work with authentic reading and listening comprehension tasks to practise technical terms, useful phrases and grammatical structures frequently used in industry, engineering and science. You will improve both your spoken English through discussions and simulations as well as your writing skills for use in subject-relevant reports, essays and emails
 

Afternoon programme

Exercise courses, lectures and seminars
Depending on your language level, you are welcome to attend any exercise courses, seminars and lectures offered in the afternoons. The lectures and seminars examine different current issues in the areas of cultural and social sciences. You will find the detailed programme in the course booklet upon arrival.
 
Language laboratory

In our digitalised language laboratory (Sprachlabor), students can use self-study materials for individual practise of listening comprehension, grammar and pronunciation by choosing from a wide range of audio material and online exercises. The language laboratory is open from Monday to Thursday 14:00 h - 19:00 h and Friday 13:00 h - 18:00 h.

Language courses: 5th to 28th August, Monday to Friday 9:15 h -10:45 h and 11:15 h -12:45 h

Exercise courses, seminars and lectures (optional): 10th to 21st August, Monday to Friday 14:15 h -15:45 h, 16:00 h -17:30 h and 17:45 h to 19:15 h

Individual practise in the language laboratory (optional): 7th to 26th August, Monday to Friday 14:00 h -19:00 h, Friday 13:00 h - 18:00 h

 

Course materials

Course materials are compiled by our teachers especially for the courses and are included in the course fee.

 

Placement test

To ensure that you will be learning in the class group matching your language level, an online placement test will be taken before courses begin. You will receive detailed information and advice by email after your registration has been completed.

You will be asked to indicate your approximate CEFR language level in the registration form. For information about the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), please click here.

 

Certificate and ECTS credits

A graded certificate will be issued to all participants at the end of the course. It will include your individual language level following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as well as your ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System).

Language course in the morning: 4 ECTS credits for regular attendance and proof of performance

1 language practice module, seminar or lecture: 1 ECTS credit for regular attendance

Language laboratory: 1 ECTS credit for 30 hours of work

Maximum number of ECTS credits: 7

Accommodation

Single rooms at student dormitories or shared flats in Freiburg may be arranged upon request from 3rd to 29th August. Please choose "with room" in the online registration form.

Room fee:
Single room: 300 €
 

The single rooms measure between 12 and 15 m² in size. They are furnished with bed, pillow and bedcover, bed linen, cupboard, table and chair. The flat will include a shared kitchen, bathroom, and in some cases a lounge area that will be shared with female and male flatmates or other residents within the same unit. Washing machines are also available. There is no guarantee that cooking utensils will be available in the kitchen. During your stay you are responsible for the cleanness of your room. Together with your flatmates you will have to keep the common areas (kitchen and bathroom) clean. You are requested to keep the noise down after 10 p.m. Shopping facilities are located near the flats. The flats are located close to the town centre, with a maximum ride of 20 minutes by bus or tram to the university and the city centre. If you book a room through SLI, the room will be assigned to you.

Arrival, transport, food, internet

Arrival

From Euro-Airport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (www.euroairport.com) you can easily reach Freiburg by bus. The schedule is available at www.freiburger-reisedienst.de. From Frankfurt am Main airport (www.frankfurt-airport.de) you can travel to Freiburg by train or bus. Tickets and schedules are available at www.bahn.de and www.goeuro.de. Due to its excellent connection to the highway, Freiburg is also easy to reach by car.

Detailed directions from Freiburg central station to our course office and a location map will be sent to you with your registration documents via post and email.

Transport

Information on transport in Freiburg is available at www.freiburg.de under the heading "Mobilität und Verkehr". Please consult www.bahn.de and www.goeuro.de to find out about train and bus connections and prices when travelling in Germany.

Food
During the International Language Courses, you can eat at the university dining hall (Mensa) at student prices. You will be given a "Unicard" for this purpose on your arrival. A complete meal costs around 3 €.
In addition to meat and fish menus, the university dining hall offers vegetarian and organic dishes as well as a variety of salads. At the university café coffee, tea, cold drinks, desserts and snacks are available at reasonable prices.
 
Internet
You are welcome to use the university PC-pools with internet access and printers as well as the wireless LAN in all university buildings for free. You will be given a "Unicard" with username and password for this purpose on your arrival. Regrettably, you will not have internet access in the dormitories.
 

Leisure programme

The experience of regional studies is not only conveyed through language instruction in our courses, but also outside the classroom in the form of a weekly changing leisure and social programme. We offer a wide variety of extra-curricular activities in and around Freiburg. Our student tutors organize city tours, pub nights, game and cooking nights, museums visits, as well as excursions to places of interest in the region. These activities give you the opportunity to get acquainted with Freiburg and the surrounding area in small groups.

 

Excursions

There will be a number of Saturday excursions, for instance to an original Black Forest village or to France. Excursion fees are between 15,- and 30,- €. You will find the detailed programme in your course booklet upon arrival. As the number of participants is limited to 40 or 50 persons, please be aware that you may not be able to participate in all day trips.

 

Visa

If you need a visa for the Federal Republic of Germany, please be sure to contact the responsible German Consulate or Embassy in your home country in advance. As soon as your registration and payment has been completed, we will send you an official invitation for your visa request by post as well as by email.

In case you would like to travel to Switzerland (e.g. Basel, which is only 60 km from Freiburg), please find out if you need a visa from the responsible Consulate or Embassy for Switzerland in your home country before departure.

 

Insurance

As an international language student you are not automatically insured against illness and accidents. We recommend that you contact your insurance company in advance to find out about your coverage. As you may be responsible for any damage you may cause e.g. in your dormitory room, we also recommend a public liability insurance.

 

Conditions of participation, registration and payment

All participants who have reached the age of 17 by the start of the course are welcome to join the International Language Courses.

Please register online on this website and pay the course fee by credit card, Pay Pal or bank transfer.
If you are a scholarship holder or if your university pays the fees, please choose the corresponding option when registering online.
 
Groups are requested to contact us by email before registering for the course.
 
After having registered you can print out the provisional registration confirmation. As soon as your payment has been completed we will send you the final course registration confirmation, an official invitation for your visa request as well as important information concerning the placement test, your arrival and your stay in Freiburg by post and by email.
 

Please bring a current photo in passport size (about 35 x 45 mm) for your participant ID.

 

Withdrawal

If you withdraw from the program up to 20 days before courses begin, 50% of the course fee and 50% of the accomodation fee can be refunded. Regrettably, if you withdraw less than 20 days before courses begin, no refund is possible.
