IELTS: International English Language Testing System
What is IELTS?
IELTS is a university entrance test for people who want to study abroad at universities or other tertiary educational institutions. It is also a precondition for immigration to many English-speaking countries, e.g. Australia. Not only is this test increasingly a prerequisite for studying in England, Australia, Canada, and increasingly in the USA, but it is recognised as a language certificate by many business enterprises as well.
The four main areas of language proficiency – listening, reading, writing and speaking – are all assessed by the IELTS exam, which is made up of four parts:
- Listening (30 minutes)
- Reading (60 minutes)
- Writing (60 minutes)
- Speaking (11-14 minutes)
Your language skills will be evaluated on a scale from 0 (non-user) to 9 (expert user).
There are two modules, the Academic Module and the General Training Module.
To study at a university or to practise an academic profession in an English speaking country, you will most likely need the Academic Module. For work placements and emigration purposes, choose the General Training Module.
Please check with the respective institutions which module they require. It is the candidates’ own responsibility to choose the correct module.
