Registration
Registration: by May 31, 2015
The German language classes take place at different levels.

In addition, a mandatory online placement test will be taken before courses begin. You will receive detailed information and advice by e-mail after your registration has been completed.

Minimum number of participants:
Please note that the minimum number of participants is 12 students for each course. If this number cannot be reached by the end of the registration period, the course will, regrettably, have to be cancelled. Of course, we will refund the entire course fee in this case.

Course fee
The course fee is 580€/person.
The course fee includes:
- 72 hours of language instruction in the morning (18 days with 4 x 45 minutes of classes)
- optional participation in the language practice courses in the afternoon
- the opportunity to use computer-assisted self-learning mechanisms in our language laboratory
- course materials
- use of the PC-Pools and Wireless LAN at the university
- the chance to eat in the university cafeteria (Mensa) at student rates
- optional participation in the leisure programme (not included: entrance fees, food and drinks, personal expenses etc.)
- information and orientation at the course office

Course description
Language classes in the morning
The syllabus offers a variety of conversation exercises and discussions, listening comprehension and current reading texts but also topics of your choice combined with modern and realistic grammar training. You can deepen and expand your oral and written competence of the German language under the guidance of our highly qualified, committed and experienced teachers.
Specific study techniques such as reading strategies or presentation skills will also be practised. The lessons follow the aims of communicative competence of the European Framework for Languages in an entertaining and inspiring way and will assist your independent learning process.
Language practice courses in the afternoon
Depending on your language level, you are welcome to attend additional language practice modules offered in the afternoon. You will find the detailed programme in the course booklet you will receive at your arrival.
Language laboratory
In our digitalised language laboratory (Sprachlabor), students can use self-study materials for individual practice of listening comprehension, grammar and pronunciation by choosing from a wide range of audio materials and online exercises.
You will find the opening hours and detailed information in the course booklet you will receive upon arrival. The language laboratory staff will be happy to help you with questions and problems.

Certificate and ECTS credits
A certificate will be issued to all participants at the end of the course. It will include your grade as well as your individual language level following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and your ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System).
Language course in the morning:
4 ECTS credits for regular attendance and proof of performance
1 language practice module in the afternoon:
1 ECTS credit for regular attendance

1 ECTS credit for 30 hours of workload

Arrival
From Euro-Airport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (www.euroairport.com) you can easily reach Freiburg by train or by bus. The schedules are available at www.bahn.de or www.freiburger-reisedienst.de respectively.
From Frankfurt am Main airport (www.frankfurt-airport.de) you can travel to Freiburg by train in approximately 2 hours. Tickets and schedules are available at www.bahn.de.
Due to its excellent connection to the highway, Freiburg is also easy to reach by car.
Detailed directions from Freiburg central station to our course office and a location map will be sent to you with your registration documents via post and email.

"Regiokarte"
We advise you to purchase a "Regiokarte" upon arrival, which allows you to travel by tram, train and bus in the Freiburg area.
If you possess a valid student ID from your home university, you can buy a “Regiokarte Schüler/Azubi” at a reduced price.
If you are not in possession of a valid student ID or you do not have student status, please buy a “Regiokarte Basis”.

Irrespective of financial capabilities and age, Freiburg offers its visitors a wide range of accommodation options with something suitable for everyone.

Please note that you yourself are responsible for your accommodation, the SLI merely suggests options. Some options offer two separate bedrooms. If you are interested in a flatshare in order to save costs, you can get in touch with fellow students in our Facebook group.

Accommodation costs
The accommodation costs should be paid directly to the accommodation provider and not to the SLI.
Host family
Should you be interested in staying with a host family during the course, please contact us in good time. We will try to assist you in your search for a suitable family according to availability.
The fees for the home stay are 450€ including breakfast and 600€ including breakfast and dinner. Please let us know in which option you are interested.
A prerequisite for staying with a host family for the duration of the course is proof of a valid health insurance and public liability insurance coverage.
As a rule, the host families do not live in Freiburg but in beautiful small cities and villages in the surrounding region. Travel by public transport can take up to appr. 30 minutes.
We advise you to purchase a "Regiokarte" upon arrival, which allows you to travel by tram, train and bus in the Freiburg area. Food
During the course, you can eat at the university dining hall (Mensa) at student prices. You will be given a "Unicard" for this purpose upon arrival. A complete meal costs around 3 €.
In addition to meat and fish menues, the university dining hall offers vegetarian and organic dishes as well as a variety of salads. At the university café coffee, tea, cold drinks, desserts and snacks are available at reasonable prices.
Internet
You are welcome to use the university PC-pools with internet access and printers as well as the wireless LAN in all university buildings for free. You will be given a "Unicard" with username and password for this purpose on your arrival.
Leisure programme
You can get to know the German culture not only within language instruction in our courses, but also outside the classroom in the form of a weekly changing leisure programme.
We offer a wide variety of extra-curricular activities in and around Freiburg. Our student tutors organise city tours, pub crawls, game nights, museum visits, as well as excursions to places of interest in the region. These activities give you the opportunity to get acquainted with Freiburg and the surrounding area in small groups.
The costs for the leisure programme are not included in the course fee.
The programme will be announced on a weekly basis during the course. The course office team will be happy to advise you.

Excursions
There will be a number of interesting excursions on the weekends, which will e.g. lead us to the Black Forest, Switzerland and France. The excursion fees are not included in the course fee.
You will find the prices as well as detailed descriptions in your course booklet upon your arrival. As the number of participants is limited, please be aware that you may not be able to participate in all day trips.

Conditions of participation, registration and payment
All participants who have reached the age of 17 by the start of the course are welcome to attend the Summer University.
Participants who have not reached the age of 18 must submit a declaration of consent signed by a parent before courses start. In this case please send an email to maria.petrasch@sli.uni-freiburg.de.
Please register online on this website and pay the course fee by credit card or bank transfer.
After having registered, you can print out the provisional registration confirmation. As soon as your payment has been completed, we will send you the final course registration confirmation, an official invitation for your visa request as well as important information concerning the placement test, your arrival and your stay in Freiburg by post and by email.
Please bring a current photo in passport size (about 35 x 45 mm) for your participant ID.
Withdrawal
The application for the course is binding. If you withdraw from the programme up to 20 days before courses begin, 50% of the course fee can be refunded. Regrettably, if you withdraw less than 20 days before courses begin, no refund is possible. This also applies in case of illness or visa refusal.
Please apply only if you are sure that you want to participate in the course.
Visa
If you need a visa for the Federal Republic of Germany, please be sure to contact the responsible German Consulate or Embassy in your home country in good time. As soon as your registration and payment has been completed, we will send you an official invitation for your visa request by post as well as by email.
In case you would like to travel to Switzerland (e.g. Basel, which is only 60 km from Freiburg), please find out if you need a visa from the responsible Consulate or Embassy for Switzerland in your home country before departure.
Insurance
As a participant of the Summer University you are not insured. Each student will thus be individually responsible for their own complete insurance coverage including insurance against illness and accidents. We recommend you contact your insurance company in good time to find out about your coverage.
As you may be responsible for any damage you may cause e.g. in your dormitory room, we also recommend a public liability insurance for the duration of your stay in Germany.
