Teaching in English- Doctoral Candidates

Course learning objectives

  • Learn about core communicative and didactic principles for teaching in English
  • Learn to apply specific communicative skills (meta-structure, use of questions, speech rate) to your teaching
  • Learn to apply specific student activation methods
  • Learn to give oral and written feedback on peer activities

Course content

The course will focus on three language skills (Writing, Listening, and Speaking) with particular emphasis on oral communicative skills for teaching. You will learn about key didactic principles (establishing learning objectives, activating students) and communicative strategies (meta-structure and cohesion, using questions, speech rate and articulation) for teaching in English and have ample opportunity to apply these in individual and group work during the course.

The course will culminate with each participant conducting a mock mini-lesson with learning objectives. Each mini-lesson will receive oral feedback from course participants as well as written comments from the course instructors. The mock mini-lessons can be recorded as a valuable reference for further professional development in teaching in English. The course will be accompanied by material designed to complement in-class activities as well as your content specific material (slides/handouts).

Certificate of Completion Requirements

In order to receive a certificate of completion, you must fulfill three requirements:

  • attend 80% of the classes
  • conduct a 10-20 minute mock teaching exercise on your field of expertise
  • write a self-reflection report on your mock teaching exercise
  • write and submit feedback on one peer’s teaching exercise
